Entry 42: Baby Steps

Entry 42: Baby Steps

During my freshmen year in college (four years ago), I saw an interesting group of individuals that changed my hopes of what college, and life, could become.

I was walking either to or from my dorm room, and in the lobby I saw a group of four or five students sitting on chairs in a semicircle, and one of them was smoking a cigar. I wasn't sure if they were friends or acquaintances; they weren't laughing or raising their voices with merriment, nor were they studying with textbooks. They were serious; they talked in a soft-spoken manner as if they were philosophizing the greater meaning of education or perhaps the infinite galaxies.

I was never sure what they were up to, but what I did see was the grand idea of a Group of Gentlemen.

That idea always stuck with me, but my group of friends didn't seem to fit within that idea of a relaxed and prestigious club. If I could form that group for myself, I would throw away the simple notion of creating a circle of comradery and enjoyment, but focus on purpose and accountability.

And as a matter of fact, I have just created that group.

Since college, I have discussed with a friend the idea of creating this fabled Gentlemen's Group, but we never actually put our foot down nor start anything. That is, of course, until last week.

So far it is the two of us in the newly created group, The Gentlemen of Today. It is a band of brothers and sisters who seek out their dreams and aspirations, but have always been plagued by procrastination and life. This group, however, endeavors to break that bad habit by setting small, yet manageable, goals for each other and ourselves.

Using a weekly deadline, our first assignment was to create a single-sentence synopsis of a narrative that we would like to write/create. These deadlines are established to be very easy, like drawing or writing one character within a week.

The basic idea of The Gentlemen of Today is to hold each other accountable to our respective goals. It doesn't matter how little progress we make; at least we are reaching our dreams one step at a time, starting today.
