Entry 85: Robotic Brothers

Entry 85: Robotic Brothers

A year ago I wrote about an influential character I created in high school: a simple robot. Over the years I have developed and evolved the storyline for my little robot, which I'm sure will evolve some more as time goes on.

In recollection, I realized that I draw a few of my main ideas from the 1999 animated movie, The Iron Giant, which features a large robot that loses his identity and befriends an innocent child. The entire plot of this movie revolves around a potentially destructive robot that could annihilate an entire army, but fate takes a detour when it learns about friendship from a human.

My story pulls themes from places like this movie, which plays with the idea of a dangerous being that is raised/influenced by a peaceful creature. My robot, which was built with the ability to distort matter and space, is "born" in an environment free from any organized groups. Without any knowledge of its potential, this robot's future is largely unknown, until it discovers the other robots...

Next to my robot is another, born at the same time. The pair of "brothers" discover their world together, learning how their legs operate and how physics can work against them. It isn't long before they start finding others like them, and they soon learn new ways of communication and interactions with the worlds they live in.

Everything is new and exciting, but the peace is broken when a band of miscreant robots start attacking other robots. My robot tries to flee, but it notices the brother mimicking the actions of the attackers. It was all fun and games until the attackers ganged up on the brother, which immediately forces my robot to defend its brother by absorbing the blows. In defiance, the brother counters its offenders with a barrage of fists, which deters the attackers and causes them to retreat.

Little did the brothers realize that their fates were sealed that day. One was a soldier, a bringer of destruction, a force to be reckoned with; and the other was a shield, a guardian, a companion who never fails. As the pair of robots dive deeper into their mysterious world, they will discover harsh terrains, overcome devious foes, and have their resolves tested as they try to survive together.
